BIOGRAPHY

An expert in Artificial Intelligence (AI) with vast experience in data science fields of machine learning, deep learning,  data representations & and knowledge engineering, with a PhD in Computer Science. I am currently working on small molecule generation using diffusion-based foundation models, and density estimation for hybrid mechanistic modelling. I am a research scientist within the Health Care team at IBM Research Africa. I previously worked as a research scientist at the Fraunhofer Institute for Intelligent Analysis and Information Systems (IAIS) and the Institute for Applied Informatics (InFAI). I am an alumnus of the DAAD scholarship program and the Smart Data Analytics group at the University of Bonn.

My research involves topics in Foundation Models (FMs), Large Language Models (LLMs), Knowledge Graphs, Conversational AI, Machine Learning, Subgroup Analysis, Subset Scanning, and Auto-stratification. Specifically, I have worked on applying  diffusion models for the generation of small molecules to accelerate drug discovery, and the use of AI to accelerate the parameter estimation process in biophysical models. I have been heavily involved in research Aligning Textual elements to Knowledge Graphs for Question Answering, Dialogue Systems, and  Disambiguation.

I have filed 8 patents with IBM in the last 2 years. In 2019, l got my proposal for Domain Knowledge Graph-based Question Answering accepted for inclusion in the Software Campus program 2019 where my team shall deliver a working prototype for QA on domain KGs working in collaboration with our industry partners DATEV eG. I have been a Faculty at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology -  JKUAT (for over 10 years), where taught several AI and programming courses. I am an experienced software engineer with a master of science degree in software engineering.

I have attended several top conferences in Computational Linguistics, Artificial Intelligence, and the Web including being a member of the Association for Computational Linguistics (ACL). Before this, I worked in several capacities notably: leading the team that carried out the Computer Science for High Schools (CS4HS) Program - 2012 at JKUAT, Coordinating curriculum development and Syllabus review processes including mainstreaming sustainable development goals into the curriculum.

IN FOCUS

In december 2023, I attended the latest iteration of NeurIPS (2023) conference in New Orleans. Before this, I gave a Keynote talk at the 3rd iteration of the ICAIR, in Lagos, Nigeria.

NeurIPS 2023 - A Tale of Large Language Models and Trust in AI

The NeurIPS 2023 conference was held at the New Orleans Ernest N. Morial Convention Center from Sunday Dec 10 through Saturday Dec 16. I attended the conference to present posters on our two papers papers on 1) Feature Importance Random Search for HPO of Data-Consistent Model Inversion, and 2) Sequential Data Consistent Model Inversion (sDCMI) at the workshop on Deep Learning for Inverse Models. I shall write a post on these two papers in a few weeks' time. I took a moment to write a post about my take away from NeurIPS conference and how the top tire CS professionals view the future of AI to be in Large Language Models (LLMs) and Trust

My Keynote at The 3rd ICAIR, 2023

I had the opportunity to deliver a Keynote talk, and a GenAI for SMEs in Africa focused panel discussion at the 3rd International Conference on AI and Robotics (ICAIR). Held on the 6th and 7th of December, in the warm, humid coastal city of Lagos, Nigeria the conference was organised and hosted by Nithub of University of Lagos, under the tutelage of Dr. Victor Odumuyiwa. My Keynote Talk at the, in Lagos Nigeria was titled: Large Language Models are Awesome, but the do not know your Governor, and surveyed the landscape of Large Language Models (LLMs) and the potential these models avail for sectors such as small business, Agriculture, Healthcare, Governance, and general domains in Africa.
